BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA- Yesterday was an important holiday for Argentina, which made for an unexpectedly exciting day for me! I have tons of pictures, taken while I had absolutely no idea what was going on. The experience reminded me of storm chasers, happily running after tornadoes, until the wind changes direction and the maelstrom comes full force back at them.
I am happy to report that I can, in fact, scale a wrought iron fence with the best of ’em. And, no, their riot police don´t use tasers — just water shot from moving tanks and tear gas.
How I wish I had Photoshop down here!

Cindy McCain Schneewittchen Konigin
I don’t know why, but platinum blond hair and motel pool blue eyes always give me the creeps. The photo editor who chose this picture probably has the same phobia. I’ve only recently taken notice that bleach-blonds predominate regressive politics. It’s not funny.
Cindy Lou is heir to an Anheuser-Busch distributorship, and was a Kappa Alpha, like Laura Bush, the Bush daughters, and Lynne Cheney.
US kills in Iraq reach 1,220,580 mark
While US casualties in Iraq hit another comma milestone, 4,000, US contractor fatalities climb above 1,123, the number of British soldiers killed is at 175 and other nations have lost 134. But the grand winner by a landslide, remain the Iraqi people at 1,220,580. According to a standard margin of error, the real total could be as high as 1,446,063. And if medical researchers start taking into account an increased infant mortality, Iraq could be nearing the 1.5M mark. Break out your candles!
UPDATE:

Will the Obama speech trump tribalism?
The press misleads us about the war, the economy, the environment, our health, even our food. Would you care to proffer one topic for which they do not present a perspective skewed by corporate interest? I can’t. Our national media cannot still broach the suggestion that our president is an imbecilic jackass. And now they’re fawning over Obama.
Oh the usual Fox buffoons are raising their objections, but I suspect it’s their turn as good cop bad cop, further building this perfect storm of electoral excitement. Everywhere I go, I hear friends talking about Obama’s speech. Oh it was some speech. Historic? Momentous? But are those their words? To compare it to JFK means to eclipse MLK like he was unsliced bread. Have you heard the speech? Is this buzz generating from you?
As a theatrical chorus setting the tone, the media is showing a wildly selective memory in rationalizing their adulation. Did we/they mean to skip over Reagan? He gave good speech. Many actors have made memorable speeches. And politicians. I favor James Galloway’s speech before the Senate, before that, I remember Oliver North’s.
Men of substance can make great speeches. Literary heros come to mind. What would happen if Americans held the presidential candidates to those standards? Czechoslovakia did. Couldn’t the most powerful elected office in the world command a higher wisdom quotient?
Barack Obama is certainly quick witted and persuasive. Has he persuaded you with the intelligence he’s displayed as a legislator? Going to war, the Patriot Act, Torture, Impeachment? Has he voiced concerns for health care reform, for example? You think Obama isn’t at liberty to be candid about those problems NOW?
Back to the media: who do you suppose our corporations, Wall Street, the World Bank, and the Military Industrial Complex want to see in our highest office? Bush is term limited, so who’s the next “best man for the job?”
I can see Americans voting for a woman, half the population are women, one hundred percent of everybody’s mothers are women. We’ve always entrusted teaching and nursing to women. More and more of our professors, judges, mayors, and governors are women. Hillary Clinton not only has political experience, she’s had a close personal brush with the top job. And to assuage any chauvinists, Hillary will have a male presidential chaperone, the traditional spouse and mentor, himself a role model to chauvinists. Is this woman electable? You have only to look beyond the media defamation to see a fully competent “bitch”.
Barack Obama’s speech may have addressed the issue of race in America with a finesse to make you swoon. So did he resolve it, put it to bed, as the media would like our own excited buzzings to conclude? Racism is in our hands, isn’t it?
I’d like to ask you, if you’ll turn off the telly for a mo, in your heart of hearts, will American voters, 90% of them who are white and can get into the polls unobstructed, will they vote for a black man? Visualize the red state voters who returned Bush to office for a second term. Visualize the ugly operatives, Christians and Blacks among them, who conspire to uphold Neo-conservative power, will they acquiesce to a black challenger?
I too would like to hope, but I’d like to hope Americans wake up to the difficult, self-critical rhetoric it’s going to take to reclaim our democracy. God Damn the anti-democratic corporate mouthpieces for offering us a calculated false hope. When Obama looses, they’ll shame us for not showing faith enough in hope.
Battle of Haditha in the eyes of artists
While US Marines were acquitted for the 2005 murder of the 24 Iraqi civilians, THE BATTLE OF HADITHA has hit the theatres in England. The Times Online and Time Out London review UK documentary filmmaker Nick Broomfield‘s dramatization of the rampage. It opens in NYC on May 7.
Black teenager taser-murdered by cops at his workplace over eating Hot Pockets
Yes, once again we see the police using their tasers to murder somebody. This time, they came and tasered a 17 year old kid working at a Food Lion grocery store, who hot eaten some Hot Pockets there and gotten into a dispute with his supervisors over it.
His mom had actually sent him back to the Food Lion telling him to settle the matter like a man. Teen Dies After Shocked by Taser by Police While at Work (Be sure to see the video where the mom talks about the police’s actions) The cops settled it like the thugs they are. And how proud the Food Lion managers there must be for their role in all this.
Lesson here? When thugs (police) are given lethal weapons to use, they will kill people with them. Researching some to write this commentary, I found that this kid whose last name is ‘Turner’, was not the only Turner to be tasered to death by police. Google some, and check it out.
Interestingly enough, just days after the Obama speech on race matters, I could find no media outlet that either mentions the race of the supervisors of this Black teenager, or the race of the cops that murdered him. What are they trying to hide, I wonder?
Nuclear disarmament will lead to peace
What’s come to be know as the peace symbol, is still referred to in the UK as the CND logo, representing the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. Recent articles about the origin of the graphic, on the occasion of its 50th birthday, have explained that the designer conceived of a circle to enclose the semaphore signal letters N and D.
Perhaps this has cleared up what some, including myself, thought they saw in the graphic. To those unfamiliar with the naval signal code, the CND symbol was explained as a C juxtaposed against a D, forming the circle and vertical divide, with a lower case n in the middle, thus CND. It turns out that the peace sign radiants, at the hour marks of 4, 6, 8, and 12, correspond to semaphore flag positions, but which? Examination of the signaling alphabet reveals an ambiguity. The same combination can be achieved with the letters A and V, or V and A since we don’t know which precedes the other. So too, G and K, K and G, D and N, and Nuclear and Disarmament.
Turkey’s Kurds and China’s Tibetans
The Western corporate press is non-stop reporting on China’s suppression of the rebellion by its small Tibetan minority of about 6 million Tibetans, out of a nation of 1.3 billion. Many in the US support independence for a portion of Tibet, which would take away about 1/5 of Chinese territory if it were to take place.
China has about 21% of the world’s entire population. The bossy US has about 5%, so let’s see how the support for other peoples plays out in US press coverage of the current Kurdish rebellion in Turkey? Are we paying much attention to it? Turkish police clash with Kurds
What? Hadn’t heard about it yet? I’ve seen plenty of Free Tibet signs in town here in Colorado Springs, but have yet to see even one calling for Free Kurdistan. Why might that be? Why is nobody in the US calling for an independent Kurdistan for Turkey’s Kurds?
Kurds make up about 1/5 to 1/4 of Turkey’s total population of 70 million. These Turkish Kurds are over 1/2 of the total Kurdish population worldwide. If Americans are so worked up over the national rights of Albanians in Kosovo and the Tibetans in China, why are they so silent on the rights of the Kurds in Turkey? What’s with us dumb Americans? Is it that we are that politically and geographically illiterate, Virginia? (asking my Mom and my cat) Is it that we think the Turkish government to be ‘democratic’? lol…
I just don’t know…
There are a lot of dumb, Right Wing atheists out there, too
This site has caused a lot of folk to think that we all hate the religious folk here, and are overly derisive of them. So want to see instead an article that drove quite a few ‘liberal’ atheist types mad? Check out Chris Hedges on The Dangerous Atheism… …Great article, and I got to read his latest book when I get the chance!
Many atheists’ belief that a supposedly logical atheism dedicated to a high tech and high science world can create a material heaven on earth is just about one of the worst and most intolerant religions around. It is nothing more than a linear illogic that oftentimes misses the mark in a manner most unscientific. Go figure? Some atheists are just about as crazy as the Religious Right is. Scientifically sold, so they think.
Eco regressive marketing
Here’s an idea whose time should not have come: PLASTIC CANS.
Canned fruit purveyors figured out that unlike baked beans or peas, the visual appeal of their produce could be a selling point. As a result, clear plastic bottles lend the appearance of an upscale alternative and command over three times the price -and social cost. What was a recyclable can, is now more plastic landfill. What was a safe container, will now leech plastic into your fruit.
The mixed up Peace Community
The Peace Community is just plain mixed up. They are always ‘commemorating’ false anniversaries, and have a great ability to count by thousands (though not by hundreds of thousands, or millions). ‘This is the 5th year of The War, and this is 4,000 down, etc. and yada, yada, yada’ …, however, they don’t really seem to have even a clue.
What I am getting at, is that The War date to remember really is January 17, 1991. That’s when the US went to war with Iraq. That’s the date the Peace Community should be commemorating, but doesn’t, simply because most of those years the so called Peace Community was MIA, or advocating even a US war against Yugoslavia. Congratulations, People, you are really on the ball! You were to busy with the Rush Limbaugh War those days, I guess?
Even now, many of the clueless people want to go campaigning to stop the Olympics, save the Fur people and give them a Dar, and to chop off a fifth of Chinese territory and make a new country out of it. Whoopeee!!!!!
Let’s think about the US some more, shall we? When did the US government go to war with the Afghan people? Come on, Peace Buddies! Hey, was it way back when Osama was still considered a Freedom Fighter? You guys are really quite clueless! Even today, you hardly are campaigning for America to end that war, now are you?
And when did the US go to war against Iran? Hey, wasn’t that back when Saddam Hussein was our government’s good friend? See the Wikipedia some about our history here… The Gulf War
Shoot, that was when most of the Peace Community was part of the porra (cheerleaders) for Daniel Ortega and team. They didn’t really have time to think about how Saddam was being backed by the US government to wage war on the Iranian people. They didn’t have time, as they took their revolutionary vacations elsewhere.
Yes, the Peace Community is just mixed up most of the time. So this election year, we’ll keep that in mind. Americans are always on Cloud Nine…. for an eternity it seems. And that includes the Peace Community. If I they didn’t forget to oppose the Drug War so much even, they might not be so drugged out? Who knows?
I guess what I am saying with this rambling rant, is that it is so sad that much of the Peace (and Justice, too) Community misses about 99% of what goes on around them, about 99% of the time. The corporate media just screws with their minds too much for most to follow what goes on in the world. The Peace People can see that in the conservative element of the population, but is quite oblivious to their own propensity to be manipulated, and about 99% of the time.
It certainly is frustrating to try to work with these people. It might be easier to work with Jehovah’s Witnesses, or some other hard-to-have-success project? Lord only knows? But I continue to work with Unitarians instead. It’s a Unitarian Peace Community.
Peace.
The Hunting of the President, in reruns

Oh, to have a president whose private life was such an embarrassment, compared to the profoundly, shamefully dark little Nero we have today.
Hillary Clinton fails us in her own right, for being a criminal corporate shill, not for past indiscretions shown by her husband.
Way of the Cross, Way of Justice

Pikes Peak area Catholics presented their annual Good Friday Stations of the Cross downtown. The stations were manned by Pax Christi Pikes Peak Region, Sisters of St. Francis, Holy Cross Novitiate, Benedictine Sisters of Benet Hill, Colorado Springs Friends Meeting (Quakers), National Alliance on Mental Illness, PPJPC, Dignity Colorado Springs, Penrose Clinical Pastoral Education, and Holy Family Parish.
Meester Vice-president, we’ve been friends a long time…
Dick ‘Shotgun’ Cheney is in the Middle East cheering up our government’s allies there.
‘Everything going by game plan, and American State terrorism is really healthy, Guys!’ YES! … Cheney in oil talks with Saudis
…You just gotta love these people, don’t you?
They remind me a lot of Saddam Hussein himself, who never for a minute lacked confidence. Maybe Cheney and The King will someday meet the same fate, though unfortunately I think they will go the way of Franco, Pinochet, and Richard Nixon instead. There’s such little real justice in the world, and it’s a shame.
I am firmly in favor of torturing to death Dick Cheney (for useful information, of course, therefore I can say such a thing, because the US Empire is such a grand democracy!) Gotta love our great people! Wave the flag! Pray for America and all that.
The fifth anniversary of Iraq War global protest wave stops in Colorado Springs
Around the world, activist organizations are uniting in steadfast protest of war without end. Beneath Big Ben a Stop The War Coalition demonstration decries OUT OF IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN. Other signs feature a peace sign in relief over TROOPS OUT OF IRAQ. What direct and unapologetic exclamations. What concise and dramatic graphics.

Some people in Colorado Springs express surprise that locals are bypassing the Justice & Peace Commission to take up the cause. In the absence of an organized PPJPC event to commemorate the 5th anniversary, newcomer Roots To Power planned the interfaith peace witness at CC’s Shove Chapel.

Protest the State Dem Convention here
A plan is brewing to protest the COLORADO STATE DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION held on May 16-17 at the World Arena in Colorado Springs. Demonstrations will be restricted to a distant Free Speech Zone, do you suppose other opportunities will present themselves? For example, state delegates will be staying at the DoubleTree Hotel.
Barack Obama on Blackwater, the Democrats on Iraq
It is an insidious ruse to think that either of the 2 Democratic Party candidates are pledging to get the US out of Iraq. At least that is the conclusion reached by Jeremy Scahill, as he discusses why no presidential candidate plans on fully leaving Iraq Jeremy Scahill is the author of the bestselling Blackwater: The Rise of the World’s Most Powerful Mercenary Army.
But even beyond Iraq, none of the 3 candidates plan to end the so-called ‘War on Global Terrorism’ or the ‘War on Drugs’. We have 3 war candidates to choose from if we decide to vote. Sure you can vote for Nader and/ or a Green Party candidate. But due to their late announcements, these are truly token candidacies and are not viable challenges to the Democratic and Republican parties. No democracy here, except for maybe Democracy Now being what we are kind of left with, along with a few non-Establishment blogs. etc. We are left with a voice on the margins but no vote.
Tell-Tale Heart: Condi’s bloody hands
Another imaginative protest by CODE PINK. Condoleezza Rice testifies with clutched hands, hiding what the audience knows are bloody palms.

Get the US/ UN out of Somalia now
It’s the war that nobody talks about. It’s Bush’s war on the Somali people. Add this war to the list of US government foreign policy, joining Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Lebanon as countries the US is destroying by engaging in war with them. It is not just about Iraq at all, and Somali is an area where the US government is committing a slow moving genocide. Battles erupt in Somali capital
Read the reports and discover that the US has displaced 60% of the population of Mogadishu and turned most of them into starving refugees. Proud to be an American now?
What is the solution to all this? Bush now wants to move in UN troops to do the dirty work for the Pentagon since his Ethiopian invasion simply has not been enough to pacify the country for the US. Somali UN peace force considered But there is a better way to end all this suffering, and that is simply to get the US and its Ethiopian proxy troops out of Somalia, and to keep the US from sending in UN proxy troops to replace the defeated Ethiopians.
The catastrophe in Somalia is made in America. Save Somalia! Get the US out now!
Something called the Green City Coalition to coagulate
I just got a notice that some inert substance is trying to come to life! Something called the Green City Coalition has sprung forward from the Sustainable Living Working Group and that it is all coming to life like Frankenstein’s monster! Here is the stated purpose of the creature…
Draft Mission Statement: ‘The purpose of the Green City Coalition is to promote an ecologically, economically and socially healthy city and county, for the benefit of present and future residents of the Pikes Peak region. We envision healthy, equitable and sustainable communities, both human and natural.’
Wow! Has a committee ever put forward a prettier announcement of its coming to life from inanimate matter? Instead of a brown shirt city we are to visualize whirled green peas! Well, actually not even that, really. Maybe Fort Carson can help out some in the greening of CS? With our help, of course…
MORE INFO—The next meeting of the Green City Coalition Steering Committee will be 6:30-8:30 p.m. on April 9 at the City Hall Academy Room, 107 N. Nevada Ave. For more information, contact Steve at sustain@ppjpc.org or (719) 632-6189.
Yes, if you can mutter the word SUSTAINABILITY, be there, or be square! This is so exciting! It reminds me of Austin, Texas, and oh YES, it is so ever green in that city… NOT.
Does this sort of vacuous nonsense really have much meaning? Or is it just a silly pretense to being some sort of counterpoint to Gazette newspaper editorials claiming that we should not worried about environmental issues at all?
I love the color GREEN! So do the Irish. So do frogs and alligators. So does the CIA. Let’s get a plan to recycle The Gazette and save Mother Earth!
Lynndie England…
Remember her? Starlet of RightWing Torture Porn?
Now she’s saying that the torture and degradation she put on the prisoners at Abu Ghraib didn’t cause all the outrage about their treatment,
It Was Our REPORTING The Incident that caused the trouble.
Ummmm… Private England, your Reality Check seems to have bounced.
I’m pretty sure while you were in Federal prison for the past year and a half that the special treatment you received wasn’t anything like the “special treatment” you and your coward pig buddies gave the helpless MEN under your power. The REAL men, not your coward pig comrades.
You said “hey, things like that happen in War”
Only, you weren’t fighting in the war. Beating up on people while they’re helpless isn’t fighting…
I realize that your punk-ass penitentiary guards who had you in custody treated YOU like some kind of hero. You were only doing what they do to prisoners every day.
Pigs never do seem to get the idea that torture isn’t a good thing. The penitentiary guards and police here in America treat prisoners basically the same way. Because the prisoners are helpless and the pigs get off to treating people like that.
Must really suck to be one of Your kids, or Your pets, or Your aged mother… Abusive people are like that. They treat anybody or any animal that’s helpless the same way.
Bitch, YOU were never a hero of any kind. You’re a sick sadistic asshole. You’re a sex offender, of the worst kind. You get aroused by torture and you, like your slimy slithering Comrades you work your evil way into a system which permits you to do it, enables you to do it, and rewards you for doing it.
Maybe a condition of your parole should have been that you go back to Iraq, and walk the streets there, every day visit every single one of the Men and Women you and your Coward Bitch Comrades tortured… alone and unarmed.
Separating the wheat from the molasses
The argument has been put strongly and with sufficient documentation that my friend Tony is divisive. And I’ll be the first to agree.
I would also add that even an organization whose tenets are cohesion, consensus and agreement, needs stimulus.
You need divisiveness when you want expansive discussions of controversial matters. How else do you spark innovative thinking but by asking the unorthodox questions? In a meeting meant to galvanize resolve, I prefer truth to soft-pedaling, although like anyone, I’m more comfortable with the latter.
If you think Tony is a contrarian, naysayer, or malcontent, I’d say you are likely on the wrong side of the fence. Even as you might protest you are sitting evenly on the fence, that’s wrong side enough, for you are sitting. Argument can be tedious, agreed, and seems unnecessary when a group is otherwise of one mind. But if that mind is complacent, or befuddled, or misguided, what better thing is there to do but mix it up?
Somebody’s got to be divisive when it comes to sorting wheat from chaff. It may seem horribly un-idealistic to separate when we aspire to unite, but is there room for everyone at the table if the table is a political agenda that requires effort and temerity? I’ll assert there is not. If the average disposition is inclined away from audacity or resolve, why lead it to water?
Everyone follows their own drummer, but if the march is on, those who hear a slower drummer have to be spun unto a side street to let the movement past.
Genocide Intervention Network Scam
How many times must well-intentioned pacifists debate the Darfur intervention issue? The Genocide Intervention Network is a creation of the Israeli lobby to push for Western colonial intervention in Africa. On the GIN website, they’ve expanded their “areas of concern” to include Iraq and Ceylon, but the adjustment amounts to lip service considering they advocate no action but Darfur.
The GIN actually stands in the way of antiwar movement. Iraq is named as an area of concern, due, it’s explained, to the region’s susceptibility to sectarian violence. The inference is that a continued US occupation of Iraq is the only responsible option.
The GIN curiously will not take issue with ethnic cleansing AGAINST Arabs or Muslims, in Palestine, Indonesia, Chechnya, Afghanistan or the Philippines. And though the GIN presumes to be global, it doesn’t express any concern for genocidal policies against indigenous peoples in the Americas. In fact, the GIN is uncritical of all US and Israeli policy except where Western intervention is deemed insufficient.
As has already been mentioned, the executive director of GIN is visiting Colorado Springs, beating what kind of drums, you’ll have to decide. The PPJPC is being asked to join the event’s supporters, on the basis that the NAACP is on board. It is true that the NAACP’s mission is shared by those interested in social justice. But where the NAACP might stray, people against war and imperialism needn’t.
Support your junior proto-fascists

What are the Girl Scouts exactly? Like Boy Scouts, they wear uniforms; and not Catholic school uniforms, or sports team uniforms, but military uniforms, of colors made to camouflage a wearer in nature. We know Baden-Powell was about well-behaved boys, kept off the street, appreciating conservationism. Did he have to dress them like soldiers?
Couldn’t girl scouts, for example, dress like girls? Probably the images of Hilter Youth would not be so stigmatized if they hadn’t looked like uniformed Nazis in training.
Republican Youth Scouts of today seem to be about the same unquestioning patriotism: duty, honor, ratting on their parents, and dressing like Fascists. In a not unrelated exploitation of youth, Girl Scouts are made to peddle cookies of a quality Keeblers wouldn’t feed a pet hobbit, hyped by the urban-mythical Thin Mints, surely viral marketing if ever there was a poor cookie
